The Regent |
When I was in college I majored in Sociology and minored in Psychology. You can imagine my delight when I come across websites like Jane Austen World and the fabulous Nancy Mayer’s Regency Researcher site. Understand that I am not your typical Regency author. I love to explore the dark side of society and mental illness in this time. An awesome book called Regency Underworld provides a look into crime and the sinister side of London in contrast to the wealthy lords and ladies of society, the sparkling ballrooms, and the worlds of Emma, and Pride and Prejudice.
Also, medicine had not yet made great strides in helping people with physical illness and especially not when it came to mental illness. Author Roy Porter has researched and written much on these subjects. One of the things I hope to achieve by exploring these aspects of the Regency is to emphasize just how far we’ve come in these areas and yet how much work is yet to be done, especially in the field of mental illness. This was a time period when the vaccination for smallpox was just being discovered and there were no antibiotics. Can you imagine?
Do you have a question about this time period? Do you have a specific time in history you enjoy reading or writing about? If you know something of interest regarding your favorite time in history and want to share that here, please do. I hope this brief look into the Regency provides some background that will be helpful to you as you read, research, or write about this fascinating era in British history.
Wow, I had no idea about this time period in history! I have only skimmed over it. Now I think I will have to really dive deeper into the Regency.
For me? WWII is my favorite time period. I heard that historians have declared enough time has passed that writers may now write historical fiction during this historical period. Yippee!
So, next year I begin my first historical fiction project set in WWII. Can’t wait to start the research!
Hi Ruth,
The Regency is fun in many ways. You must investigate further.:) WWII seems to be blossoming all over in more recent novels. I want to hear about your experiences as you write that next novel. Sounds like a great idea to get you to come over here and guest blog.:)
Oooh! I can’t wait! I will definitely keep you posted….
Blessings!
Ruth
I’m fond of the Wild West and the Civil War eras. I used to think they would be fun to visit, at least until nightfall. I’d lived on my grandmother’s farm enough to know some of the charm of those eras fades when you have to make your way to the outhouse in the dark.
Ha, Ha! That’s when you need the power of time travel. Beam me up Scottie, I need to use the the Space Powered Port-O-Let.
I absolutely LOVE the regency era. I’ve gone through all the paperbacks in my library, looking at the spines for that little word “regency”. 🙂 I’ve read them all!!!!
Hey Sherrinda,
I just got hooked on a Regency mystery series by C.S. Harris. It’s not Christian Fiction if that’s what you’re interested in and the murders can get really gory but I’m addicted to her hero, Sebastian St. Cyr. Check her out. The first book in the series is called What Angels Fear.
I will have to check it out! Thanks for the heads up. 🙂
